Mike Esch writes "Altera has announced their next generation soft-core CPU, the Nios II. I’m happy to announce we’ve released a full uClinux distribution in conjunction with the Nios II release. This distribution consists of a 2.6.5 kernel, uClibc and some 70+ applications (including Busybox).
As the Nios II Development Kits contain an Eclipse-based IDE, we’ve also created several Eclipse plugins (some still under development) that will allow for configuration, building and debugging of the kernel, uClibc and applications from within this IDE.
The distribution is freely available for download from http://www.niosforum.com
. Currently, it is wrapped with Installshield and works under Windows and Cygwin only (the predominant environment for the Altera EDA tools). Very shortly, we'll be carving out and posting just the kernel tarball.
Stay tuned, lots more to follow in the coming weeks.

Mike Esch
